Gabriella Rivalta
| GABRIELLA RIVALTA trained as a painter, and since 1969 has had a passion for creating enameled miniatures. Her own imaginative jewelry designs feature gold charms and pendants hand-painted, in tiniest detail, with images inspired by fairy tales, flowers, and the animal kingdom. In her laboratory near Milan, each piece begins with enamel melted at 800 degrees. When cooled, it is painted with transparent paints. Then it is glazed, fired, and painted again, a process patiently repeated until the image achieves the desired detail and a pleasing depth of color. The enamel is then fused to a base made of 18-karat gold or copper. Ms. Rivalta calls her finished jewelry “illuminated gold,” bringing to mind the medieval manuscripts illuminated with full-color miniatures. Her enchanting necklace and earring designs unite her fine enamelwork with Italian gold and cascades of gems.
