Enameled Gold Jewelry
To create enameled gold jewelry, enamel, a form of glass, is heated to 800 degrees. When the enamel cools and hardens, it is painted by hand. For the finest enamelwork, this first layer of enamel is painted using transparent paints. It is lightly glazed and fired, and when it has cooled, another layer of paint is applied. With infinite patience, the artist repeats this process until the painted image has the desired detail and a pleasing depth of color. The enamel is then fused to a base made of either 18-karat gold or copper.
Simona Italian Jewelry features enameled gold charms and pendants by Italian jewelry designer Gabriella Rivalta. For 35 years she has created original designs which are handcrafted by her team of artists in her laboratory near Milan. She calls her finished jewelry “illuminated gold,” bringing to mind the medieval manuscripts that are illuminated with full-color miniatures.
Trained as a painter, Ms. Rivalta has a passion for enameled miniatures. Her research into the enamelwork produced by ancient cultures, such as the Phoenicians, has brought to light the traditional techniques and materials best suited for creating and perfecting her own imaginative jewelry designs. Each piece is hand-painted, in tiniest detail, with images inspired by fairy tales, fruit and flowers, and the animal kingdom. The images are captured forever in enamel in colors both soft and vivid. Every piece is unique, and possesses the unmistakable quality of Italian art.
